The Department has a long-standing and continuing compliance program relative to the implementation of effective best management practices (BMPs) associated with timber harvesting forestry activities, including road construction associated with these harvesting operations.
Since the Alabama Clean Vessel Act was passed in 1993, more than $500,000 in grants have been awarded to help marinas install boat sewage pumping stations to reduce sewage dumping and protect Alabama waters.
The stations are easy to use and conveniently located. Some stations offer special wand attachments to make pumping cleaner and more efficient. Marinas offering pumping stations are clearly marked with recognizable orange and white signs.

Alabama's coastal beaches are a major tourist attraction as well as a lifestyle staple for Alabama residents. Alabama has approximately 50 miles of Gulf Beach and an estimated 65 to 70 miles of bay beaches where the adjacent waters are classified for swimming under the State's Water Use Classification System.
