Coastal Watershed Survey Program

Initiated in 1993 by the Mobile Field Office, this program utilizes a spectrum approach for assessing the condition of the small subwatersheds located in Alabama's Coastal Area.

The strategy of this program is to integrate data collected from the water column, sediment and macroinvertebrate samples with information on land use, topographic characteristics, wetlands, and project growth and development, with a focus on the effect of non-point sources on these watersheds.

Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Development

TMDL Background Information

Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act (CWA) requires states to submit a list (303(d) List) of surface waters that do not meet applicable water quality standards (impaired waters) for which implementation of technology-based effluent limitations alone do not ensure attainment of applicable water quality standards. The list of impaired waters includes priority rankings for establishment of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for these waters.
